SMS Topperbots – one of our newest teams has been busy this year with two meets. In teams of two, students built a robot that is able to push orange and yellow hubs into target zones. For added points, robots can be designed to either park or hang their robots all within a minute. On December 13th SMS hosted a meet, with six teams in attendance. This is the second year of our team – and we have more teams than ever! The teams really had their eyes opened when they saw the robots that some of the other teams had brought. They quickly realized what this event was about – teaming up and making a plan with another team, not necessarily from their own school, to earn as many points as they could. The points are tallied after five or six rounds, and the top teams earn their way to the state finals in March. The Topperbots traveled to Tilton in January for their second meet, and this time there were five teams. Two of the teams earned special recognition at this meet – one for most improved and one for the elite middle school design. The bots will have one more meet in February in Manchester – and we will see if any qualify for states! This group meets afterschool as an enrichment. They wouldn’t succeed without the support of SYC! If you have any questions or want to help sponsor them please contact Mr. Gerding, Ms. Hahn, or Mr. Donahue!
